First edition of this illustratred edition of de Rojas classic text. One of 350 numbered copies on Richard-de-Bas laid paper, signed on the colophon page by the artist. Illustrated with 66 etchings and aquatints of varying sizes, dated in the copperplates between April 11 and August 18, 1968. The etchings for Picasso's final large project of book illustration are part of the famous "347" series that he realized by etching almost daily between March and October 1968. As well as the paintings he made during his last years, they evoke Picasso's obsession with death as well as with sexuality. The often brutal tendency of the imagery points towards the ultimately indomitable passions of man.
