Paris, Editions Pierre à Feu/Maeght Editeur, 1947. 24,5 x 21 cm, 142pp., original blank wrappers, b/w and colour ill..; pink cardboard chemise on which is mounted Duchamp's 'modified readymade', a foam rubber woman's breast painted in delicate, naturalistic colours, surrounded by black velvet. Complete with the original grey cardboard slipcase, with tipped-on ‘Prière de toucher’ label. – A numbered copy of the de-luxe edition on vélin supérieur with Duchamp's object Prière de toucher, the famous breast, in fine to 'immaculate' condition.
The de-luxe edition of the catalogue includes twenty five original graphics, hors texte : six colour lithographs, by Brauner, Ernst, Hérold, Lam, Miró, and one by Man Ray (not mentioned in the colophon); five etchings (one colour) by Bellmer, Marcel Jean, Maria, Tanguy and Dorothea Tanning; two woodcuts by Arp; twelve b/w lithographs by Brignoni, Calder, Capacci, Elisabeth van Damme, Julio de Diego, Enrico Donati, David Hare, Jacqueline Lamba, Matta, Kay Sage, Tanguy and Toyen. With the collaboration of everybody who was anybody in the surrealist universe, this is one of the great collective exhibitions. 'La salle de pluie et le dédale' was designed by Duchamp; 'la salle de superstition' by Kiesler, who also directed the installation of the exhibition.
