One of 25 numbered de-luxe copies of this pamphlet on "carton ivoire", printed in red (500 regular copies on papier simili announced).
According to Mariën (L'activité surréaliste en Belgique, p.356) the homage to Saint-Just fitted in with the agitation provoked by the 'question royale' in Belgium , leading in 1951 to the abdication of Leopold III. At Magritte's suggestion the execution of Louis XVI was illustrated with a seascape and the crucified Christ confronted with an erotic photograph of Man Ray. The pamphlet calls for the elimination of the pope, 'le provocateur suprême de tous les crimes contre l'émancipation de l'homme, (...) Pie, douzième porc de ce nom (...)'; and quotes Saint-Just :'Un roi, quel qu'il soit, est condamné par la nature. On ne peut régner innocemment.'
